Blue Marlin

Article published on April 21st 2016

Immortalized by Ernest Hemingway in The old man and the sea, Blue Marlin is the dream of every angler.

Without being either the biggest or the fastest, it's a fish with exceptional features.

We always confuse marlin and swordfish. Yet, the first French edition of the old man and the sea talked about a swordfish, however, Hemingway was talking about a big marlin. These two fish are however not of the same family : marlin is among billfish family and swordfish, xiphiidés. We can easily differentiate them by the rostrum, marlins have a conical snout while the swordfish is flattened. Moreover, the eye of the swordfish is very large, linked to its essentially nocturnal hunting activity and used to live deeper than marlins. For these two reasons, it is hardly fished in fishing sport, when it comes to fishing big fish, there is almost always marlin and sailfish, and hardly ever swordfish.
